Easter fun

Most years here at Cherry Street we are able to send home an Easter basket filled with goodies with each student.  This is possible because of the donations we receive.  This year we decided to do something different.  Each family received a carton of Resurrection Eggs.  These eggs and the scripture provided help the children and their families learn about the days leading up to Christ’s crucifixion and his glorious resurrection!

Annual Church Visits

This is always a fun time of year when we get to visit local churches.  Our intention is to expose our children to community churches that could potentially become their families’ “church home”.    We visit different churches each year.  This year we visited the 1st Nazarene,  Living Word, Ambassador Christian, Zion Lutheran, and the 1st Baptist churches.

2017 Christmas Program

We had a wonderful night!  Over 300 people were in attendance at this years program.  The children worked so hard and everything turned out wonderful.  Thank you to all the volunteers that came to helps us and to Pastor Steve Suttles with the Church of the Nazarene for delivering a message to the children and their families about God’s love and sacrifice for each of us.  Hopefully hearts were touched

Challenge time!

This year November marks the first month of our annual fundraising campaign .  Our goal is to raise the funds we need for another year of running Cherry Street.  We currently work with 139 children K-8th grade each day in our East, West, and Warehouse programs.    Every child starts their day with us with a nutritious after school snack and is sent home knowing a little more about God’s love for them!   Proverbs 22:6  Teach children how they should live, and they will remember it all their life.  GNT

As you know, we are growing here at Cherry Street.  We are working with more children than ever before and are offering new and creative learning opportunities to the children.  Our garden program is expanding to include a greenhouse and we have added honey bees to the program.  Growth does mean additional operating cost.  We have a $50,000 match challenge again this year!  We have a donor willing to match $1 for $1 to kick off our fundraising season.  Each dollar donated to Cherry Street now through December 25th will go towards meeting the  match.  When we meet this challenge we will have $100,000 to go towards next years budget.  That will be about 1/3 of what we need for the year.  God provides for our needs through each of you and your donations.  Your volunteer work with the children is another provision through God.  Your investment into our children can be life changing!

We are blessed to be a blessing!  Scripture makes it clear that God blesses us not so we can live with greed, but so we can bless others. God loves a cheerful giver. When He sees that someone is giving freely out of love, God blesses them more.  As you find yourself considering what mission or ministry to support, please put Cherry Street at the top your list.  We have had over 1400 children come through the doors at Cherry Street sine 1995,  That’s a lot of lives receiving guidance and tender nurturing.  Please help us share God’s word and love with the children of Chanute.

All donations can be mailed to us at PO Box 414 Chanute, Ks 66720.  You can also donate on line through our Facebook page (Cherry Street Youth Center) or our web site at www.cherrystreet.org.

Your Sister in Christ,

We are growing Cherry Street!

I am very excited to share our plan to grow!  We will be adding a greenhouse and a new classroom space for our garden class.  Our garden class was started in 2003.  It has been a great way to provide our children with hands on learning, problem solving opportunities, and to gain knowledge of growing their own food.

The dream of a greenhouse is not new.   A few years ago we received donations for the specific purpose of purchasing a greenhouse.  Those moneys have been in a savings account and have allowed us to begin the fabrication process with Stuppy Inc.  They are a well known company in Kansas City that builds greenhouses.  We will be getting a 30 x 48 foot greenhouse.  This will enable us to do year round growing with the children!

Back to School!

Our children will be coming back to Cherry Street and the Warehouse program on August 16th.  Our “theme” for the year is going to be Fruit of the Spirit from Galatians.  We will be dedicating one month to each fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.

Please pray and consider how you can help us in our mission to share the fruit this school year with the children.  We always need volunteers and love to have guest speakers.

Summer FUN!

So far this summer, our children were able to attend TWO VBS programs, 60 children have completed two weeks of swim lessons and we have served about 1,000 breakfasts and 1,500 lunches in June.  As part of our dinosaur week, Mr. Martin, a Geologist from KDOT came and spoke with the children about the fossils we can expect to find in Kansas.   We have a fun filled July planned for the children.  We just want to thank each of you for your financial support and prayers for our summer programs!!

Warehouse Happenings

Our first year of middle school programming is in the books as a successful year!  We had over 30 children registered to attend through out the school year.  We want to thank the Presbyterian Church for housing us.  Ms. Mary (with the church) has been super helpful and a great mentor to the children.

We anticipate growth in the program for next year as many of our current 5th graders plan to attend next year as a middle schooler.  We hosted a 5th grade “tour” of the program and the kids had a blast.

We truly feel these children need poured into.  Please pray for guidance for the Warehouse staff to fill the needs and let these children grow in Christ.
